Barung

Barung

(Javanese, Balinese : together, in common ; collective, joint)

1. In Central Javanese gamelan, when we want to differenciate an instrument's range/size from the others, we can add the term barung to its generic name, like shown in the table :
Low range Middle range High range
saron demung > saron barung > saron panerus
bonang panembung > bonang barung > bonang panerus
gendér panembung > gendér barung > gendér panerus

The saron barung is often referred to simply as saron, in which case the saron demung is referred to as demung.

2. In Bali, barung, which has the same meaning as abarung, is sometimes used when referring to an instrumental ensemble as a complete set. This applies of course to the gamelans.

Related words are mabarung (playing gamelan as a competition), barungang (competition, match).

Etymology

Is it connected to the Malay warung (stall) and barung-barung (shelter, platform) ?

Other romanizations
