Gamelan of the island of Madura, of Javanese type, is little known and discs devoted to it are very few. Unlike many a recording of Yogyakarta and Surakarta court gamelans, this one unveils to us a colorful and lively gamelan, without dullness, boredom or fatigue. Is this what explains a family likeness between this gamelan and certain styles of the Cirébon region ? Even the dalang's singing reminds us of Cirébon. It does not mean that the two regional styles blend, the difference remains clear to the ears.
It is a seléndro gamelan of Sumenep's keraton, at the eastern tip of Madura. Its repertoire is devoted to wayang (drama). The gamelan is relatively small, of fourteen instruments (if one counts the dalang's voice), it has no kenong. But the players know how to get out of it a beauty of sound and a guenine rhythm, which is the least a gamelan can do. Least it can do, but these dear players of Sumenep's keraton make of it this compact disc's merit.
